The 2023 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics was awarded to Claudia Goldin, the Henry Lee Professor of Economics at Harvard University. Professor Goldin was recognized for her groundbreaking work examining the reasons for gender pay differences in the US labor market. Since the economics Nobel was first awarded in 1969, she is the third woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Economics and the first to win it solo.
Code of Medical Ethics Opinion 9.5.5, Gender Discrimination in Medicine, states that "inequality of professional status in medicine among individuals based on gender can compromise patient care, undermine trust, and damage the working environment. Physician leaders in medical schools and medical institutions should advocate for increased leadership in medicine among individuals of underrepresented genders and equitable compensation for all physicians."
